霧峰林家宮保第園區 – 第四進[英文 English]

The fourth section is located after the third section and is one of the rear courtyards in the “five-section, eleven-bay” layout. It continues along the mansion’s central axis and serves as a space for private family life, study, and internal reception.
The architecture follows the style of the first three sections and was expanded and renovated by Lin Chao-tung during the Tongzhi to Guangxu periods, maintaining consistency throughout the mansion.

Layout and Function:
The fourth section primarily functions as a study, place for learning, and space for calligraphy and painting collections. Some areas are also used for daily living or private family gatherings.

Architectural Details:
The roof ridges, wood carvings, window lattices, stone carvings, and decorative clay reliefs are all finely crafted, preserving the typical craftsmanship of Qing Dynasty official residences. Compared with the previous sections, this courtyard is quieter, with smaller, more intimate spaces that create a sense of privacy and restraint.

Spatial Design:
The central axis continues through the fourth section, with symmetrical side wings (hùlóng) extending on both sides, forming a complete courtyard sequence with layers and depth.

The fourth section symbolizes the family’s cultural refinement and scholarly pursuits, reflecting the Lin family’s emphasis on education, arts, and intellectual cultivation.
